World Heart Day

is not a life sentence; it is a medical condition that can be understood, treated, and managed. It refers to a group of neurological disorders that cause recurrent seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Because epilepsy has many possible causes and presentations, recognizing its symptoms and underlying factors is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
Yet, despite being one of the oldest recognized medical conditions in history, epilepsy remains surrounded by myths and fear. Misunderstanding often leads to silence. Many people hesitate to speak openly about their diagnosis, worried about stigma or discrimination at work, school, or within their communities. For many individuals, the social challenges can feel heavier than the seizures themselves.
Knowledge changes that. When we understand what epilepsy truly is and what it is not, we replace fear with awareness and judgment with support. Open conversations help reduce stigma, encourage early diagnosis, and empower those living with epilepsy to seek the care they deserve.
On International Epilepsy Day, let’s choose awareness over misunderstanding and compassion over stigma. Let’s talk openly about epilepsy because education is the first step toward acceptance and better lives.
