Prevent Colorectal Cancer with Early Screening!

A doctor explaining colorectal cancer screening options.

Understanding Colon Cancer: A Silent Threat

Colon cancer, while often asymptomatic in its early stages, poses a significant risk to individuals usually aged 50 and above. In around 90% of cases, the disease manifests as colon polyps, benign growths that can become cancerous over time. Through regular colonoscopies, these polyps can be detected and removed before they have the chance to develop into cancer. This preventive measure has been instrumental in reducing the incidence of colon cancer and saving countless lives.

Rising Concerns: Colon Cancer in Younger Populations

While colon cancer is traditionally associated with older individuals, there has been a concerning rise in cases among younger populations, particularly in Arab regions. Factors such as genetic predisposition, unhealthy lifestyle choices, and environmental influences have contributed to this alarming trend. Therefore, in UAE regular screening starts earlier than in European countries, as early intervention is crucial in identifying and treating colon cancer in its nascent stages, offering patients a higher chance of survival.

Colorectal Cancer Screening: Available, But Rarely Used in UAE

In the UAE, screening procedures are available, but their use is still rarely used. According to a 2023 study by Latifa Alsaad and Jayadevan Sreedharan from the College of Medicine at Gulf Medical University in Ajman, United Arab Emirates, the prevalence of colorectal cancer screening is a mere 9.1%. Although this was more than Saudi Arabia, the United States and Spain had far higher screening rates (38 and 80%, respectively). The main factors impeding the practice of colorectal cancer screening include the doctor’s failure to offer a screening test, anxiety over positive test findings, test discomfort, pain issues, and a lack of knowledge about CRC screening.

Without enough information on colorectal cancer and its possible dangers, people could not see the value of getting screened. They could fail to recognize the importance of screening because they underestimate the frequency and possible severity of colorectal cancer. A barrier to attend screening may also be insufficient knowledge about the many CRC screening choices and techniques such as sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, or fecal occult blood test (FOBT) as an alternative.

Non-Invasive Liquid Biopsy Test for colorectal cancer screening

The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), in partnership with M42, has introduced a non-invasive blood-based cancer screening for colorectal cancer, termed as liquid biopsy. Called Shield, the test looks for the presence of specific changes to DNA floating freely in the blood, called cell-free DNA, that indicate the presence of a tumor or precancerous growths in the colon.

This innovative and non-invasive test provides a more accessible and comfortable screening option for patients, reducing barriers and encouraging greater participation in regular screenings. It complements, but does not replace colonoscopy, which is the gold standard for colorectal cancer diagnosis. By enhancing early detection capabilities, this test marks a significant advancement in the fight against colorectal cancer.

The liquid biopsy will be provided as part of the IFHAS comprehensive health screening program and is available at key healthcare centers of Ambulatory Healthcare Services (AHS) and M42 across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Al Dhafra Region.

Seize the Opportunity to Avoid Colorectal Cancer!

During colorectal cancer awareness month, we join to highlighting the importance of taking proactive steps to safeguard our health and well-being. In the UAE, colon cancer screening is readily available to every individual aged 40 and above, for those with higher risk even early. By initiating conversations about family history, consulting with healthcare professionals, and embracing preventive measures, we can collectively combat colon cancer and save lives.

Early detection services are available through (IFHAS) program to all Thiqa-card holders in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

          A Call to Action

Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DOH) recommends the following screening tests for men and women of age (40 – 75) years old

  • colonoscopies once every ten years, or
  • stool test (FIT) once a year, or
  • Liquid Biopsy Shield Test (blood test) provided to people with specific inclusion criteria

Those with a higher susceptibility to colon cancer, including those with a family history or underlying medical conditions, are advised to undergo more frequent screenings.

These guidelines serve as a roadmap for early detection and intervention, offering hope to communities across the UAE
