Introducing Felix: A Beacon of Hope:
In the annals of medical history, there are stories that transcend time, leaving an indelible mark on society. One such story is that of Felix, a young German whose legacy continues to save lives even after his passing. Diagnosed with are rare type of familial colon cancer at the tender age of 33, Felix’s life was cut short by a disease that could have been prevented – by open conversation about cancer within the family and preventive measures tailored for high-risk individuals. His tragic tale serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection and preventive care in the fight against cancer.
Colon cancer, while often asymptomatic in its early stages, poses a significant risk to individuals usually aged 50 and above. In around 90% of cases, the disease manifests as colon polyps, benign growths that can become cancerous over time. Through regular colonoscopies, these polyps can be detected and removed before they have the chance to develop into cancer. This preventive measure has been instrumental in reducing the incidence of colon cancer and saving countless lives.
While colon cancer is traditionally associated with older individuals, there has been a concerning rise in cases among younger populations, particularly in Arab regions. Factors such as genetic predisposition, unhealthy lifestyle choices, and environmental influences have contributed to this alarming trend. Therefore, in UAE regular screening starts earlier than in European countries, as early intervention is crucial in identifying and treating colon cancer in its nascent stages, offering patients a higher chance of survival.
In the wake of Felix’s untimely demise, his family took decisive action to honor his memory and prevent others from suffering a similar fate. The Felix-Burda Foundation was established to raise awareness about the importance of preventive care. Through their tireless efforts, the foundation had major impact in the transformation in the landscape of cancer care in Germany. Free colonoscopy screening to millions of individuals was initiated only one year after Felix´s death. Since then, the country observed a significant reduction the mortality rate from colon cancer.
As we reflect on Felix’s remarkable legacy, we are reminded of the importance of taking proactive steps to safeguard our health and well-being. In the UAE, colon cancer screening is readily available to every individual aged 40 and above, for those with higher risk even early. By initiating conversations about family history, consulting with healthcare professionals, and embracing preventive measures, we can collectively combat colon cancer and save lives.
A Call to Action The Abu Dhabi Public Health Center (ADPHC) recommends annual blood in stool tests or colonoscopies every ten years for individuals aged 40 and above. Those with a higher susceptibility to colon cancer, including those with a family history or underlying medical conditions, are advised to undergo more frequent screenings. These guidelines serve as a roadmap for early detection and intervention, offering hope to communities across the UAE.
This post is intended to respond Felix’s desire for more public knowledge. During colon cancer Awareness Month, we want to increase awareness about the resources available via our healthcare system to protect ourselves and our loved ones from colon cancer and its tragic consequences.
